Why we do what we do:
First and foremost, because Jesus said to...

Matthew 25:35-40
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me. Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’  And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me’.

Two, because the need is so great.

25% of children in Buncombe County live in poverty.
That's 1 in 4 children without their basic needs! (2011)
That's 580,000 children just in the state of NC. (2011)

In 2011, 6.2 million children were referred to Child Protective Services (CPS).
In 2011, 3.7 million children were investigated for maltreatment by CPS.
In 2011, 676,569 children were determined to be victims of abuse or neglect.

  • 78% were victims of neglect.
  • 18 % were victims of physical abuse.
  • 9% were victims of sexual abuse.
  • 5 children will die from abuse or neglect today
  • In 13 seconds, another child will be abused in the U.S
  • Children age 2 and under are most likely to be victims of abuse and neglect.
  • More than 11% of victims had a reported disability.

Approximately 408,425 children were in the foster care system.
Children enter foster care for several reasons:

  • 18.8% Physical Abuse
  • 7.9% Emotional abuse
  • 6.2% Sexual Abuse
  • 3.2% Caretaker Inability
Most enter without anything to their name. This is why we do what we do!
